Check out the “earthships” built by Mike Reynolds and his crew outside Taos New Mexico. They’re made out of tires, cans, bottles, and pounded earth. They’re designed with green houses facing the south side so the homes get heated via a passive solar system and also you can grow food inside them year round. The tire walls compacted with earth make for greater mass, and thus excellent thermal energy. The house is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Water is collected from rainfall, filtered, and stored. Electricity is generated from sun and wind. Reynolds and his coworkers who also have earthships are not dependent on any municipal systems for their utilities and have everything they need where they live. These are nice homes too, as you can see from the pictures below.
