Well, you want to avoid soy, and most brassicas (cabbage, kale, broccoli) because they can suppress thyroid function. It helps to get lots of iodine-rich foods, like various sea vegetables (available at lots of Asian foodmarkets.) Minerals like zinc and copper are helpful to stimulate thyroid hormones. There are two different thyroid problems which are basically opposite of each other, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a severe underproduction of the thyroid hormone. For hypothyroidism, some people have suggested the zone diet. The zone diet specifically balances the amount of protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake, control the intake of excess simple carbs. This diet has been used for weight control, but can also be useful for hypothyroid patients, because of its focus on carb control to avoid insulin spikes.
