Since the first life forms developed in the oceans, water is fundamentally important to all organisms. Water is thought to have been present when the first organic molecules were formed. As a polar molecule, water can conduct electricity when it has dissolved salts in it. It is believed that when lightning struck the so-called “primordial soup,” the first building blocks of life were created. Today, water serves as a medium through which marine organisms can travel to get food and flows through their gills, supplying them with oxygen. Water also works within all organisms to carry nutrients around their bodies, supplying energy to all of their organs. That is why it is important for land mammals like us to stay hydrated.
