Dewclaws are considered a vestigial digit–a digit that has evolved to a point where it has lost its function, and thus serve no real purpose. There is very little muscle and structure present there, and it essentially is useless. Some domesticated pets born with dewclaws have even had them removed, sometimes necessitated by its withered development making it more a hazard than a redundant feature to have. There are people who claim that dewclaws aid animals such as dogs in traction with holding objects between their paws, though this may be merely incidental.
