Natural gas can be used to generate electricity, manufacture plastics and other materials, fuel buses, and heat homes. The general consensus is that natural gas is more “clean-burning” than other hydrocarbon fuel sources like coal or petroleum. Advocates state it releases 50% fewer carbon emissions. Also America has a big supply domestically so, the gas wouldn’t be traveling from the other side of the world and hopefully would help the U.S. reduce its dependence on foreign oils, a goal every President since Nixon has articulated. The controversy is that the extraction of natural gas is not environmentally friendly. Fracking, specifically, uses a lot of water and chemicals that get pumped into the earth and the process is currently barely regulated.
