If you will be driving a Chevy Volt in California, one benefit is that you’ll be able to use the HOV lanes with only one occupant in the vehicle, starting in mid-2012. However, unlike Nissan Leaf owners, you won’t qualify for a $5,000 tax rebate. California reserves this rebate for cars that produce zero emissions–the Volt will switch to a gas engine when the battery runs out, whereas the Leaf does not. The Volt will still be eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit.
