what is a benefit of industrial societies?

The first thing that comes to mind is increased service and/or product quality. As companies compete with one another, they need to make their product better than the next, and want to make the experience unique and safe.

Essentially, industrial societies rely heavily upon machines (powered by fossil fuels) to produce manufactured goods for a consumer market.  In this basic sense, it doesn’t seem as though there are any environmental benefits to be gleaned from their existence.  They are, however, succeeded by technological societies, and the proliferation of more efficient production technologies is good news for mitigating the negative impacts of production.
