Many in the Tucson area are trying to preserve conditions for the owls by implementing a land conservation plan. The plans trys to balance the need of people and nature. They want to buy out land and preserve the space for endangered animals.
The pygmy owl was originally listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 1997, but was then removed. Defenders of Wildlife and other groups filed a petition to re-list the species as endangered in March 2007. Educational programs are also heling to protect the animal along with habitat restoration. If you want to help as an idividual, you can ‘adopt’ an owl at the site below and learn more about the species.
