What is bear baiting?

Bear baiting is a form of entertainment that revolves around torturing bears.  Bear baiting usually invoves a bear restrained by chains, and otherwise handicapped (teeth and claws filed down or pulled out), being attacked by hunting dogs for the amusement of humans.  Neither the bear nor the dogs are necessarily killed, but the contests are certainly traumatic, and bears are likely forced to engage in multiple such contests in the course of a single day.  The sport was quite popular in England from the 16th to the 19th century, and is still practiced today in Pakistan.  Bear baiting was also once popular in Russia, where the bear’s opponent was a human, rather than dogs.
