Lithium Ion batteries and Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) batteries both have very low self-discharge rates (the amount of energy lost over time when not in use). One of the limitations with Lithium Ion batteries though is that they do age whether they are in use or not, whereas most other batteries only age when they are in use.
In a study comparing the lives of Duracell, Everready, and Energizer, it was the energizer batteries which lasted the longest, followed by Duracell, and lastly by Everready.
