Balsa wood is used for many applications: RC & model airplanes, wood towers, bridge structures, surfboards, hobby shops, movie props, decoy carving, bird chew toys, boat hulls, full scale airplanes, mulch, land transportation, scientific studies, race cars, rockets, fishing lures, acoustics, and food sticks (Specialized Balsa Wood, LLC., 2011).

Balsa wood is light and not very strong, so for the most part it is used for applications that do not require it to bear lots of weight. It is also easy to cut, so that is why it is used for detailed models. In Odyssey of the Mind, a creative problem-solving competition, there is a different challenge involving a balsa wood structure each year. Budding engineers like to enter this competition, and sometimes they manage to do amazing things with balsa wood.
