Opponents to the existence of commercial zoos condemn them on the grounds that they unethically trap animals in cages/pens and exploit them for profit. Historically, zoos were primarily series of cages or ditches which held exotic animals inside. Although today, many zoos attempt to reconstruct the natural environment and habitat of the species, the animals are still restricted to a tiny portion of ground relative to their wild territories. Plus, many animal rights supporters maintain that animals have a right to liberty as well, which makes keeping them locked up for human enjoyment an abhorrent activity.
