In 2004 the average American home was 2,330 square feet in size. Comparatively, it was 1,400 square feet in 1970.
According to the United States Census, in 2010 the average square feet of floor space in new single-family houses was 2,392. Regionally, the Northeast had the largest average house size at 2,613 square feet. The Midwest had the smallest houses on average at 2,265 square feet. The South and West had sizes of 2,393 and 2,386 square feet respectively.
