The US Department of Transportation reported that a typical car is on the road for about 12 years or 128,500 miles. However, there are cars that can last almost indefinitely- one man, Irv Gordon, has driven his Volvo for 2.6 million miles, all with the original engine and turbocharger.
The US Department of Transportation (DOT) reports that the average life span of a car is just over 13 years. The average mileage a car should get is about 145,000 miles.
According to the US Department of Transportation, the average lifespan of a car is 13 years. Consumer reports states that the average age of a car on US streets is increasing, (9.4 years on average in 2009). This increase in average age could be due to cars lasting longer, the recession or inflation making it harder for people to replace an aged car. It would be interesting to see how these numbers changed after the “cash for clunkers” program.
