Australia is suing Japan over Japan’s whaling activities. The government of Australia has “declared the southern seas a whale sanctuary and has long lobbied for an end to whaling there”. Their argument is that Japan, through its whale-hunting, is breaking international obligations. They could also argue that Japan “is abusing its rights under the whaling commission’s 1946 Convention, which allows scientific whaling”, but does not allow for the hunting of whales for other purposes.
New Zealand is also considering suing Japan for the same reason,
