Aspen is a common name for trees of the Salicaceae family. The species in this family are trees distinguished by their nearly round leaves on mature trees, 4-12 centimeters in diameter with irregular rounded teeth. Aspen wood is white and soft, but fairly strong, and has low flammability. Aspens and other members of the Populus genus contain salicylates, compounds related to aspirin. Leaves and leaf buds of aspens have been used to treat burns, irritations, aches, and swollen joints.

Aspen trees are notable for their ability to regenerate by forming new sprouts after forest fires. They are also popular with foresters due to this ability to regrow.
