The Blacksmith insitute created a list of the world’s ten most polluted cities in the world in 2007. China is the only country to appear on the list twice. Tianying and Linfen are both on the top ten list, while no other Asian country appears on the list. Also, most of the pollution present on the West Coast actually drifts over from China.
That really depends on what measure of pollution you’re using. China is producing the most carbon dioxide, but not as much per capita as Japan. Japan produces the most municipal waste per capita in Asia; South Korea has the most nitrogen oxides per capita. My guess is that large cities in China are in the worst condition, but the countryside is not so bad.
