Asbestos is a type of mineral, a silicate, formed into long thin fibers. There are six minerals that are classified as asbestos: chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite and actinolite. Asbestos is dangerous to humans (something that has been known since the ancient Greeks). It can be rendered harmless by heating it to high temperatures which turns it into a non-hazardous silicate glass.
