“Wilderness” status is an important consideration in designating an area as a National Park. The Silver Falls State Park in Oregon has been nominated and evaluated for National Park status more than once, but turned down because the surrounding areas had been heavily logged. Blackwater River Canyon in West Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains has also been proposed recently. The area has been called the “Grand Canyon of the East.” Senators often call for the designation for wild areas valued by their constituents.
