The Horn of Africa is one of the most biologically diverse hotspots in the world. However, it is also one of the most degraded spots. Another area in Africa that is a biodiversity hotspot is on the southwestern region called Succulent Karoo (picture n/a). Both of these areas are arid.

I would say the West African countries, the Zaire Basin, and eastern Madagascar where there are tropical rainforests, which are said to be the ecosystem highest in species diversity. I just today read a statistic at Seattle’s zoo that said in a 2.5 acre range of tropical rainforest, there can be found over 47,000 species of insects–the direct result of the plant species’ diversity.
