“Roundup ready” crops are crops that are genetically engineered to be resistant to the popular Roundup herbicide (active ingredient: glyphosate). This means that farmers that plant Roundup ready crops can use Roundup to kill weeds in their fields without any fear of damaging their crops.
“Roundup” is the brand name of a systemic herbicide produced by the U.S. based company Monsanto; it has been the best selling herbicide since 1980. “Roundup-ready” crops are genetically engineered plants that are tolerant to glyphosate, which can battle broadleaf and cereal weeds. Current Roundup-ready crops include soy, maize, canola, sugar beet, and cotton.
