According to the EPA, volatile organic compounds are “organic chemical compounds whose composition makes it possible for them to evaporate under normal indoor atmospheric conditions of temperature and pressure.” These compounds are made up of hydrocarbons and are known to pollute groundwater supplies. Volatile organic compounds are often (though not always) created through manufacturing manmade products such as paints, adhesives, petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, and refrigerators.
