Velvet can be made from a variety of different fabrics although traditionally it is made from silk. In modern times it has also been made from polyester, cotton, nylon and some other synthetic and natural fibers. So just like any fabric made from natural fibers the fabric can have trace amounts of pesticides on it. The synthetic fabrics are often made from petroleum products. Velvet is hard to clean and therefore usually dry cleaned which can also leave trace amounts of dry cleaning chemicals on the fabric.
