There are more than three: water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, nitrous oxide, and CFCs. However, CO2 is the most important.
Greenhouse gases can be both from natural and synthetic sources. Of the major greenhouse gases, water vapor is by far the most abundant and occurs naturally. Carbon dioxide has gained huge amounts of attention because of humans’ effect on increasing concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere. And methane is characterized by its high absorption of heat from radiation. All of these gases combine with others to trap long wave infared energy in the atmosphere, retaining heat.
