The atmosphere is composed of various gases and is a thin layer of gas that surrounds the Earth.  The most important layers of the Earth are the troposphere and the stratosphere.  Roughly 90% of all molecules can be found in the troposphere layer.  Air is a mixture of the various gases found in the atmosphere.  The three main gases (and a small fourth gas) that composes the atmosphere are: Oxygen (21%), Nitrogen (78%), Carbon Dioxide (0.04%) and a fourth gas, Argon (0.9%).  There are other gases, however, they are present in much smaller amounts.
