Photochromic lenses achieve their properties through embedded microcrystalline silver halides, mostly silver chloride.  The lenses interactive with organic photochromic molecules, such as oxazines, to darken in UV light.  The lenses lighten up in a room because of the absence of UV short wave light, in other words, there are no organic photochromic molecules present to darken the lenses.
