The New York Times did a big investigative report on this issue a few years ago and findings were grim. The study looked at stats, violations (some cases in which government officials took action and some cases that they’ve ignored), and problems with sewers and ultimately U.S. drinking water. It reported that since 2004 20% of the country’s water systems had not met standards set in the Safe Water Drinking Act, some 49 million people in the U.S. were drinking water that had higher than legal concentrations of bacteria and chemicals including radioactive particles, and most of these water systems serviced rural or small town populations.
Although there are a few places in the US where water may not be fully treated, most tap water is quite good. Keep in mind that there are over 300 million people in the US and most of them have access to excellent tap water. The standards on tap water are actually more stringent on standards for bottled water. Here is a list of the top 100 municipal tap water providers in the United States as well as a link to a very informative video that I think you will enjoy.
