What are standard coffee filters made out of?

And are there any green alternatives?

Disposable coffee filters are often made of bleached paper pulp. Some paper coffee filters are made with unbleached paper pulp which reduces the amount of chemicals used in processing and therefore may reduce the chemicals that you consume when you drink your coffee. Metal coffee filters are made with very fine meshed screens and are generally regarded as more eco-friendly than paper coffee filters because they are reusable.
