That depends on whether you are interested in air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, noise/light pollution, or some other type of pollution. For air pollution, private motorized transportation is a major source. For water pollution, agricultural fertilizers are a major source of phosphates. Here are a few pie charts to show the breakdown on the sources of those pollutants. Since the effects of different pollutants are different, it is hard to say which ones have the worst effect on the environment overall.

The Political Economy Research Institute published a list of the top 100 worst air polluting companies in the world. The Bayer Group, which manufactures pharmaceutical products, pest controllers, and plastics are the number one company on the list. Companies that are related to the use and production of oil occupied a good amount of space in the top fifteen: Exxon Mobil, Sunoco, Ford Motor Co., ConocoPhillips, Valero Energy Co., General Electric Co., and Dow Chemical Co. each hold a spot on the list.
