Between 1990 and 2005 one-third of the forest cover in the Philippines was destroyed, mostly by logging operations. Illegal logging still continues in many areas of the Philippines today, along with mining operations that also contribute to the degradation of the country’s forests. Although the government has tried to stop these activities, their destruction of forest cover continues. Only 5 percent of land in the Philippines is protected, which further compounds the problem.
