Cloud seeding is one way to modify the amount and type of precipitation. Cloud seeding works by dispersing commonly known cloud condensation nuclei and ice nuclei in the atmosphere in order to alter the cloud microphysical processes to enhance precipitation. Airports also used cloud seeding in the past to suppress fog and hail. Cloud seeding is much less common now, but China used cloud seeding for the 2008 Summer Olympics to reduce the likelihood of rain during the Opening Ceremonies.
