Wal Mart has a plan to reduce their green house gas emissions by 20 million metric tons by 2015. To get a sense of the magnitude of this goal, this is apparently equivalent to taking 3.8 million cars off the road for a year. The three ways they plan to do this is:
Walmart uses the site to store option, which saves them on the extra carbon emissions it would necessitate to deliver items to homes. Free shipping serves as an incentive to the customer to use this option. While the customer still drives in to the store, chances are they would anyway…..and can pick up their items when they do their regular shopping. The end result is less, un-necessary trips so less gas and less carbon emitted to the atmosphere.
