Particulate matter is composed of nitrates, organics, acids, soil and dust particles, as well as many other small particles. These particles are emitted from direct sources, such as construction sites, unpaved roads, fields, and fires, and indirect sources, such as power plants and automobiles. A fairly simple way to reduce the production of particulate matter is to reduce automobile emissions, which can react with ambient atmospheric chemical species to form particulate matter. Reducing power plant emissions as well as construction site emissions may also help to mitigate the production of particulate matter.
