Food waste is a persistent problem for grocery stores. But, many try to reduce food waste when they can. Some stores will place soon to expire food on sale to encourage movement off the shelf. Others will donate soon to expire food to food banks or homes for the elderly. Normally products going to food banks will be donated two weeks before expiration to ensure it is still usable. Produce at times will be sent to a zoo or composted depending on the availability of each option.
