Probably the most important is photosynthesis and carbon dioxide. Plants use carbon dioxide in the process of photosynthesis thereby acting as carbon sinks.
Wetlands also act as natural filters and can filter water by using excess nutrients from runoff.
Wetlands are natural water filters, and can even be used to filter wastewater. Wetlands are particularly efficient at filtering nitrogen and phosphorous from agricultural pollution out of the water. Attached are a couple of links with more information.
