San Francisco has city composting and combined with this and recycling they’ve been able to reduce the amount of solid waste sent to a landfill by 77%. Other parties like New York, the University of Michigan, and grassroots organizations have smaller scale composting programs in use or development. There are also organizations like the Los Angeles Catholic Worker and St. Andrew’s societies that divert older food from grocery stores and restaurants from the trash and use it to feed the financially challenged.
