In general, top-loading washing machines are more inefficient than front-loading machines, as they require more water and electricity to run. The front-loading machines only fill up to about 1/3, rather than filling up all the way to wash the clothes. Also, the smaller the machine the less water needed, and less gas/electricity to heat the water. Most of today’s machines are much more efficient than their clunky counterparts that were popular in past decades, but you there are some brands such as Energy Star that offer particularly efficient models.
