Ethanol can be used as a fuel (both for cars and rocket fuel), an antiseptic (it’s in most hand sanitizers), a solvent, and (my personal favorite) it’s the psychoactive part of alcohol (the stuff that gets you drunk). As a fuel, ethanol is commonly suggested as a green alternative to fossil fuels, because it is grown from infinitely reproduceable feed stock instead of dead dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs, of course, have virtually nothing to do with oil, natural gas and coal, all of which derive almost entirely from plant matter.
The infinite reproducibility of plants to make ethanol does depend on fertilizers, many of which have significant environmental impacts in their mining and production, and the fertilizers when they enter water systems and run off also create dead zones such as those in the Gulf of Mexico.
