There are a number of strategies we can implement to make cities more sustainable. One of the most holistic approaches is to view the city as an ecosystem, where the byproducts of one operation become the inputs for another (instead of becoming waste). This can be achieved by eco-industrial parks, where industrial facilities are grouped together so that companies can share resources to close the loop on material usage. For example, a power plant’s byproduct of fly ash can be used by a linked concrete facility rather than shipped elsewhere or disposed of. Resources should go into a city and remain in the loop infinitely, never being discarded or thought of as waste.
