The regions in North America that are in danger of desertification are the great plains and the coastal regions. A recent analysis done by the Institute of Agro Food Research and Technology ranked prairie and coastal regions seventh and eight most threatened worldwide, with a 4 out of 10 on a scale drawn from various desertification indicators.
The areas in the most danger are the sub-tropical desert regions in North Africa, Australia, the Middle East, and Southwest China. They scored 7.6 out of 10 on the same scale.
The semi-arid regions of southern California have already experienced desertification primarily caused by overgrazing. Now invasive grasses have replaced the complex and diverse native sage scrub and chapparal ecosystems.
