In 2006, the Biaji River dolphin was declared extinct when a research expedition failed to find evidence of a single living member of the species. The list also includes the golden toad, last seen in 1989, and the passenger pigeon, whose sole remaining member died in a Cincinnati zoo in 1914. These aren’t the only victims though: this past century has seen the extinction of hundreds of species. The link below will tell you a little bit about the ones I mentioned above, as well as 7 others.
One large mammel species that is probably extinct is the baiji. A river dolphin that was found only in the Yangtze River in China, fishing nets and boats were likely factors in their demise. Some think that a handful still exist in the Yangtze, but an expedition in 2006 turned up nothing.
Another recently extinct animal is the Caribbean Monk Seal which was the only known seal that was native to the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. This is the only species of seal to go extinct directly due to human causes. This species of seal was declared extinct only a couple of years ago on June 6th, 2008. This seal was the first new world mammal to be discovered by Columbus on the coast of Santo Domingo in 1494.
