Since there is a Senate committee on the Environment and Public Works, one would expect that there would be environmentally friendly public works projects. There have been many attempts to bring the two topics together. Basically now, at least in California, all the new public works projects are either being constructed with the explicit intention of “greening” the existing system, or they are being built in a green way. Some examples are building desalinization plants, building green energy sources and improving energy transmission, and improving transportation.
Another new public works project drawing media attention is drawing energy from waste landfills. Companies are starting to use methane gas from rotting garbage and converting this into energy. This project offers triple the rewards in helping the environment by capturing the greenhouse gases, converting waste into energy, and helping to reduce bad odor and trash.
