One product we can be proud of, that doesn’t get much publicity, is asphalt pavement. Asphalt pavement is 100% recyclable meaning no matter how many times it is reused, it does not degrade in quality. Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), as it is commonly referred to, consists of mostly sand, stone, or gravel and a petroleum based glue, or asphalt binder, that holds it all together. Reusing asphalt pavement is as easy as grinding up an old piece of asphalt road and mixing it with a portion of HMA; the quality of the resulting pavement is equal to or better than the previous pavement. The US recycles 80.3 million tons of asphalt every year, which is 10 million tons more than scrap steel and 70 million tons more than newsprint, glass bottles, and aluminum cans combined.
Aluminum cans and aluminum in general is one product we do a good job of recycling. Aluminum is eternally recyclable (100%) and is in multiple products such as food and beverages. It also requires far less energy then creating new aluminum products.
