What are some problems with not having separated recyclables?

    If improper, non-recyclable materials get into a recycling batch they can ruin the whole thing. For instance, food can be composted, but not left inside of recyclable materials because it will taint the batch and therefore the materials that could have been recycled just have to be thrown away. The single stream system is an effective way to combat this problem, as materials pass by people on a conveyer belt, they sort out what is recyclable and what is not.
