A big problem in wave energy lies in the design of the device. Because of the unpredictability of the ocean, it needs to be able to efficiently produce energy in both a calm and hostile condition. Making a stronger device usually means more costs and more parts. Additionally, because waves can come from different directions, depending on wind and ocean conditions, wave energy converters needs to be able to account for many scenarios. There are also environmental challenges including change of migration for some species, noise annoyance for local habitats, and the creation of artificial habitats.
