Erosion of viable soil makes growing crops and raising lifestock difficult. Erosion along coastlines depletes habitat and beach areas and may infringe upon residential areas. Ending deforestation and using sustainable farming practices can help to limit erosional effects.
Erosion is a serious threat to the planet’s layer of topsoil. Contained in this topmost layer of soil is a giant network of water passages and the microorganisms that maintain them. Once these passages are damaged or the microorganisms are killed, this topsoil can not effeciently transfer nutrients throughout the soil. This effectively destroys the topsoil making it extremely difficult (if not impossible) to produce a crop.
