Considering the number of troops and general personnel working with the U.S. Armed Services, they are fairly responsible when it comes to environmental concerns. One of the biggest areas of potential improvement, however, is in the reduction of paperwork. The Armed Services still rely on an enormous amount of paperwork, and reducing that paperwork to computerized formats would greatly help the environment.
The AEPI (Army Environmental Policy Institute), linked below, would be a good place to check out regarding specific policies and initiatives the US Army is hoping to enact to increase their sustainability and reduce their environmental impact. Two big areas they focus on is munitions disposal/recycling/clean-up and facilities maintenance. These areas contribute to much of the environmental and energy waste that adds to the less than ideal environmental record our armed forces have.
