Poison ivy is probably the most common example of a plant’s adapted defense mechanisms against animals. It produces an oil which does not affect some animals, but it does cause rashes in humans. Chili peppers also have a defense mechanism against herbivores–capsaicin, which is the chemical that makes them spicy. However, this doesn’t always work as many people actually enjoy the burning sensation produced by the plant.
