The computer boom has led to a larger increase in electronic waste. As older computers become outdated, many are simply discarded and thrown away without being eithe recycled or properly dispossed of. Computer waste in Indian alone is expected to grow 500 percent from 2007 levels by 2020.
“Permanent” damage is practically impossible; the earth heals itself quite well on geological time scales, or even on scales of a few thousand years. Of course, if by “permanent” you mean a few human lifespans, then that’s a very different situation.
The “computer boom” could actually be one of the best things to happen to the environment. Given that increased computer technology has led to breakthroughs in green science, the computer boom could be the counter to damage and pollution which began with the industrial revolution.
