According to Marinebio.org, there are about 400 Monk Seals estimated in the Meditteranean as of 2012.  The species is highly endangered and nearly extinct.  In the colony located in Western Sahara, the population declined from 300 to 107 in 1997.  In 2006, it was estimated by various sources, republished in the Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences that the population along the Atlantic and Meditterranean was 495 -553.
